Capcom confirms Code Veronica remake
Code Veronica was notable for being the first Resident Evil game not to debut with Sony when it was released on the Sega Dreamcast in 2000. After 11 years, Veronica is ready to make her return, this time in HD. Capcom has confirmed today that they will be remaking Code Veronica alongside Resident Evil 4. Both games will be available via download for PS3 and Xbox 360. A release date has not yet been revealed.
I don’t know if I could play Code Veronica without the convenience of the health meter on the Dreamcast VMU. Will you be considering the remake of Code Veronica, or are you content with the Dreamcast original?

Alex nailed what I’ve thought about video gaming post-Dreamcast a few podcasts ago when he said that once the Dreamcast hit the need for better graphics with future consoles finally ceased. The Dreamcast was the first system where a game literally looked as good as you’d hope it would, where graphical limitations no longer stifled the creativity or gameplay in a video game. Hell, I’m still pretty satisfied with later life Saturn games like Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, Sonic R, etc. Okay, maybe not The House of the Dead…
But this is a big “meh” to me. The Dreamcast version still looks and plays as good as ever, I don’t think it needs any sort of overhaul. And yes, not having the benefit of the added immersion of the VMU also makes this a less desirable port. Virtua Tennis, Skies of Arcadia, NFL 2K, Code Veronica, Sonic Adventure…I can’t imagine playing any of those games without the gameplay elements introduced by the VMU. That’s one thing the Dreamcast will have on all its modern successors until someone decides to bring the portable screen memory card back. Considering cloud gaming concepts introduced by NGP, I’d imagine this will actually become a reality sometime in the next generation of console gaming.

Being a huge Resident Evil fan, I don’t fully understand why Capcom is even doing this. Resident Evil 4 was ported to the Wii, so it’s technically been release for the current gen. Code: Veronica is a decade old, yes, but haven’t most people found it on the PS2 at this point if they wanted the full experience with Code: Veronica X?
Seems kinda pointless to me, so I’m gonna give it a “meh” as well.
And ironically, I just picked up C:V X since it was only $7 used. Unless they add a buttload of extras, there’s no way I’m paying more than that much for either of these remakes.

Very true! When I play Shenmue, the graphics still look gorgeous to me. I can only imagine how much further the system could have been pushed had it been supported longer.
I agree. The original stands the test of time for me. I do not see too much room for improvement that a remake would be necessary. Hopefully Capcom will prove me wrong and outdo themselves.
I had similar feelings after playing Resident Evil 4. The 4th chapter is an absolutely amazing game, it just did not feel like a Resident Evil sequel to me. The change in controls and story almost make it feel like a new franchise. Code Veronica feels like the high point to me.
