Japan Is Just Like You, Thinks Sega Games Are Interesting

Recently, a survey was done by by Japanese gaming magazine/website Dengeki about the most interesting games of 2010 so far. Although the results might not be what you expect (congrats to Etrian Odyssey III and Nier!) Sega definitely holds on to a decent chunk of the list with three games in the top twenty. The list is as follows:

So what do you guys think? Do you agree with the stuff (that’s been released where you live) that’s on this list? I do, but that’s because I’m one of the six people in America who enjoyed Nier. Do wish some of the Sega stuff was higher, but hey, what can you do?

I’ve been thinking about Nier, and I really wish it wasn’t an RPG. The whole farming/fetch quest/fishing side is ridiculous, and weapon creation you could just call entirely broken. I couldn’t farm for materials, since I didn’t really know where to get anything, and the one time.. the ONE time I finally had enough for an upgrade, I travelled all the damn way up to the workshop and they just weren’t in. Why is that even possible?
The story and characters were fantastic though, and it meshed hack and slash with shmup elements pretty well. There was just an awful lot of ancillary stuff that actually made the game worse. Ridiculously interesting game though whatever side of it you find yourself looking at it from, especially if you make it to the absolute end.
Resonance of Fate was probably my favourite game I’ve played this year. It’s not quite an RPG in the strictest sense, and they probably shouldn’t have bothered trying to set up an ‘epic’ story that fell flat. There really was nothing wrong with it just being a ‘hang out with your mercenary band’ sort of thing. Everything else though was just fantastic, I was always having fun at every juncture, and the amount of music was ludicrous.
Lost Planet 2 is interesting in just how you can get a coop game so incredibly right and wrong at the same time. Not being able to drop in and out, and having everyone lose if someone killed themselves too many times was just absolute madness without any real checkpoints in between. In the reverse, fighting that thing with the massive train cannon could be the most incredible moment I’ve ever had with four other people. I want a game which is just coop set pieces like this.

To be honest, Nier is one of those games that’s best played with a guide of some sort. Some of the missions are nigh on impossible if you don’t have access to some sort of help. I’m very close to getting ending B and I have all but one mission completed. I’m really looking forward to finishing it up and maybe doing a bit of Trophy farming along the way.
I haven’t actually purchased RoF yet, due to my Tri-Ace phobia. I’ve heard very good things, so I’ll probably get it in the near future.
Also, LP2 seemed to cut out a lot of what I liked about the first one. I’ve mostly played singleplayer, and it’s REALLY designed for coop. Very much like Monster Hunter with guns.
